ALFRED, N.Y. -- Freshman
Hayley Cronin became Nazareth's first-ever individual titlist in Empire 8 cross country Saturday as she directed Nazareth to a third-place finish at the conference championship meet at Alfred University.
The Golden Flyers finished a solid third in the women's team standings with 67 points, just nine points behind champion Utica (58). Stevens finished second with 63 points. Houghton finished fourth with 77, followed by St. John Fisher (95), Hartwick (178), Sage (180), Elmira (234) and Alfred (269).
In the men's race, Nazareth sophomore Chris Celecki finished in fourth place as the Golden Flyers finished fifth in the team competition with 91 points. Utica set the pace with 43 points, followed by St. John Fisher (70), Stevens (73), Houghton (78), Nazareth (91), Hartwick (210), Alfred (210 and Elmira (219).
In the women's meet, Cronin covered the muddy 6-kilometer terrain in 25:52.67, more than eight seconds ahead of runner-up Kaitlyn Stinson of Utica.
Sophomore
Deirdre Brett also ran well for the Golden Flyers by finishing third with a time of 26:14.94. Next was junior
Maria Staehr in 18th place (27:33.04), followed by freshman
Claire Bargabos in 20th place (27:38.68) and Senior
Eileen Shea in 25th place (28:13.18).
Others who competed were sophomore
Lauren Guilfoil in 28th place (28:25.71), sophomore
Kaitlyn Dobbertin in 31st place (28:36.03), junior
Megan Menz in 58th place (30:53.44) and sophomore
Clare Brownell in 64th place (31:29.98).
In the men's 8-kilometer race, Celecki was timed in 30:36.41 and trailed champion Tyler Deuschle of Houghton by 38 seconds.
Senior Andrew Gwynn placed 15th in 31:19.05 with sophomore Michael Brown next in 21st place (31:34.24), then senior Jack Wessel in 25th place (31:48.59) and freshman Jake Suddaby in 26th place (31:50.23).
Other Nazareth competitors were freshman Joshua Tomaka in 36th place (32:49.87), freshman Josh Pomerleau in 38th place (33:01.18), sophomore Devyn Chase in 40th place (33:05.56) and freshman Patrick Healy in 64th place (36:25.43).
