PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth outscored St. John Fisher 16-7 in overtime Tuesday to take away a thrilling 93-84 victory over the Cardinals in a key men's basketball game in the Empire 8 Conference.
Tyler Stenglein scored a team-high 24 points, including six in overtime, as Nazareth remained unbeaten in conference play at 4-0. The Golden Flyers are 9-4 overall. Fisher dropped to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the E8. The teams meet again Feb. 10 at Nazareth.
Four others finished in doubles figures for Nazareth.
Jake Burgio scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds, while
Cody Green added 13.
Stephen Gabel scored 12 and
Brendan Wind had 10.
The game was close throughout with Fisher leading 43-37 at halftime. Nazareth stayed close and regained the lead at 57-55 following a basket by Burgio and a pair of free throws by Gabel with 12:30 left. Fisher fought back with Sammy Robinson as the catalyst. He scored 17 of his game-high 27 points in the second half, including a three-pointer with 6:38 left that extended Fisher's lead to 71-67.
Nazareth stayed resilient and tied the score again at 72-72 on a basket by Burgio with 1:55 to go. Fisher's Michael D'Amico hit a three-pointer on the next possession to give Fisher the lead again at 75-72. A pair of free throws by Stenglein and one by
Jon Werner tied it again, then Robinson hit a short jumper to give Fisher its last lead at 77-75. Stenglein then used the glass to bank in a short jumper in the closing seconds to force overtime.
Nazareth then scored the first two baskets of overtime – one by Burgio and a jumper by
Cody Green – to take a 81-77 lead. Baskets by Burgio and Stenglein were followed by a short jumper in the paint by Wind, who extended the lead to 87-82. The Golden Flyers then cashed in at the free-throw line to seal the deal. Stenglein converted three more foul shots and Green drained two more.
Nazareth shot well from the floor in making 33 of 57 shots (57.9) and 24 of 36 free throws (66.7). Fisher went 35 for 78 (44.9) from the field and 8 for 17 from the line. The Cardinals had a 48-28 rebounding edge with Ryan Henderson grabbing a game-high 11 in addition to scoring 21 points.
The Golden Flyers are back on the road this weekend for a pair of key conference games. They visit Stevens Friday at 6 p.m. and Hartwick Saturday at 3 p.m.
