Hoboken, NJ – The Nazareth College men's basketball team won the battle of unbeatens Friday, with Tyler Stenglein (13-for-17) going for a career-high 35 points (13-for-17) in a 96-89 victory over Stevens.
With the win, Nazareth is the lone undefeated time in the Empire 8 at 5-0, while Stevens drops to 6-1 in league play. The Golden Flyers are now 10-4 overall after winning four straight games.
Brendan Broderick, who finished with nine points on 3-for-3 from downtown, hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the first half to give the visitors a 24-12 lead at the 12:15 mark.
That matched Nazareth's largest lead at the half, but the Ducks were able to whittle the margin down to 48-41 going into the break.
In the second half, Stephen Gabel gave the Golden Flyers their largest lead of the game at 64-50 five minutes in. He finished the game with 13 points (2-for-4) and eight rebounds.
The Ducks made a furious charge over the next six minutes with a 16-6 run to draw within 70-66 with nine minutes left on the clock.
Stenglein hit his lone 3-pointer of the game at 4:04 which appeared to give Nazareth some cushion at 85-75, however, Stevens cut the lead to just three with two minutes to play.
Nazareth was clutch from the line in the final two minutes, going 7-for-8, to seal the victory,
Stenglein finished the day 13-for-17 and 8-for-14 from the line. He also had four assists and two steals.
Jake Burgio ended with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Cody Green chipped in 10 points.
Nazareth returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Hartwick for a 2 p.m. matchup.
