Updated statsPOUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Nazareth split a pair of men's volleyball matches Saturday as the Golden Flyers continued their United Volleyball Conference schedule. The Golden Flyers scored a three-set sweep over host Vassar in the first match by scores of 25-21, 27-25, 25-23. Then the eight-ranked Golden Flyers dropped a tough five-setter to fifth-ranked New Paltz by scores of 25-15, 21-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-11.
Nazareth is 19-4 overall and 2-2 in conference matches. New Paltz is 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the UVC, while Vassar is 11-9 and 0-3.
Junior
Tim Zyburt had nine kills against Vassar and junior
Josh Hieb added eight kills on 12 swings. Junior
Grant Levermore had seven kills, three service aces and a match-high 13 digs. Freshman
Jake Kemp had 24 assists. Kemp also had one kill, which came at the end of the second set to clinch a two-point Nazareth win. Zyburt then added five of his kills in the third set.
Then in a wild match against New Paltz, Zyburt had 15 kills and freshman
Sam Bittker added 11 and Levermore 10 with three aces and four digs. Kemp had 40 assists.
After New Paltz dominated the first set, Nazareth captured the next two as Zyburt had eight of his kills over the second and third sets and Bittker had seven more.
After New Paltz took the fourth set, Nazareth was up 5-2 in the fifth set before New Paltz rallied to score six straight points to take control. New Paltz's John Lutjen had two of his 15 kills in that string and Christian Smith had one of his three service aces. Nazareth stayed close and was within 13-11 before New Paltz took the final two points on a kill by Christopher Husmann and a combined block from Lutjen and Husmann.
The Golden Flyers are idle until March 19 when they travel to Penn State Behrend for a UVC match.
