OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Nazareth had leads of 8-2 and 9-3 Saturday against Dickinson, then was outscored 9-5 in the second half, but held on for a 13-11 non-conference victory over the Red Devils in men's lacrosse. Saturday's game was the first of three to be played at the Greene Turtle Classic at Stevenson University's Mustang Stadium. The game was orginially slated for Friday, but was reschedule due to inclement weather. The Golden Flyers play 10th-ranked Cabrini Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
Junior attackman
Luke Wooters scored three goals and added four assists and classmate
Troy Haefele added two goals and four assists. Seniors
Dan O'Brien and
Will Fallo also scored twice each as the Golden Flyers improved to 4-2 overall. Dickinson dropped to 2-4 overall.
Nazareth dominated the action early by scoring five times in the first quarter and three more times in the second to build a commanding 8-2 lead. Five different players scored in the opening quarter with Wooters contributing a goal and two assists and Fallo scoring the fifth goal on an extra-man opportunity. O'Brien, Haefele and
Kyle Fanning also scored.
Dickinson's Rob Kendall interrupted Nazareth's scoring string with the first goal of the second quarter, but Wooters and Fallo had the next two goals to put Nazareth up 7-1. Junior
Matt O'Neill, returning from an injury, then scored off an assist from Haefele late in the third quarter to make the score 8-2 at the half.
The teams exchanged man-up goals to open the third quarter with senior
Matt McDermott scoring Nazareth's goal from Haefele's pass. Three straight Dickinson goals trimmed Nazareth's lead to 9-6 before Nazareth regained momentum by closing out the quarter with goals by Wooters and O'Brien to bring an 11-6 advantage into the final quarter. Wooters' goal came unassisted after he intercepted a pass by Dickinson goalie Nick Baxter in front of the crease. O'Brien's goal came off an assist from
Hunter Burdick.
Dickinson made the final 15 minutes uneasy for the Golden Flyers as the Red Devils scored five times. Nazareth was able stymie the Red Devils' rally behind goals from
Nick Arnold and Haefele.
Dickinson scored its final goal with :43 left, but senior
Drew Simoneau won the ensuing face-off for Nazareth and the Golden Flyers were able to run out the clock.
Simoneau enjoyed a typically dominant day at the face-off x by winning 18 of 28 draws with 16 ground balls. Nazareth also had a 48-32 advantage in shots and a 32-16 edge in ground balls. Sophomore
Michael Cuciti played all 60 minutres in goal for Nazareth and had six saves.
