Nazareth splits with Wells, Elmira

Golden Flyers complete regular-season schedule at 15-9 overall

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Ninth-ranked Nazareth split a pair of non-conference men's volleyball matches Sunday as the Golden Flyers completed their regular-season schedule with a 15-9 overall record. Nazareth easily defeated Wells in three sets in the first match, then lost in four sets to 11th-ranked Elmira. Scores against Wells were 25-14, 25-17, 25-13. Scores against Elmira were 25-13, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21.

Nazareth is now idle until April 12-13 when the Golden Flyers will be the top seed and host for the United Volleyball Conference Tournament.

Sophomore Coulton Every had six kills against Wells, which also lost to Elmira Sunday to drop to 16-10 overall. Nazareth hit .284 as a team (30-11-67) and also got five kills each from freshman Robert Sarneckis and sophomores Josh Hieb and Bobby Beeman. Sophomore Cody Nelson added 19 assists.

Against Elmira, sophomore Grant Levermore had 10 kills and Tim Zyburt had nine. Junior Nick McDonagh totaled 31 assists and sophomore Cory Randolph had 11 digs. Elmira's balanced offensive attack featured 10 kills each for Mike Ellison and Ryan Gelenitis.

The Soaring Eagles hit .387 (15-3-31) to dominate the opening set and then used a 12-2 scoring run to rally from a 12-9 deficit in the second set to go up 21-14.

Nazareth came back to take the third set behind four kills and a pair of blocks for Luke Lawatsch, but Elmira sealed the match with four kills apiece from Ellison and Gelenitis in the fourth set. Michael Vellutato finished the match with 39 assists.
