No. 9 Nazareth defeats Penn State Behrend 3-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – No. 9 Nazareth sweeps Penn State Behrend 3-0 in men's volleyball Saturday afternoon.  Scores were 25-23, 27-25, 25-17. The Golden Flyers are now 9-5 overall and 7-1 in the UVC. With the loss, the Lions fall to 7-4 overall and 4-3 in UVC matches.

Sophomore outside hitter Tim Zyburt led the Golden Flyers with 12 kills, with junior center Luke Lawatsch following closely earning nine kills and a .600 hitting percentage.  Junior setter Nick McDonagh amassed 32 assists in the victory over the Lions.

Defensively, Nazareth earned 11 total team blocks. Lawatsch lead the team with four blocks, earning one solo block and three assisted blocks. Zyburt added three assisted blocks for the Golden Flyers.

In game one, Nazareth fought back from a 23-19 deficit, scoring six unanswered points to close the set. Zyburt was a strong contributor in the comeback, serving for all six points.

In the second game the Golden Flyers led the Lions for the majority of the set, with a 17-10 advantage at one point. Penn State Behrend fought back, earning a 22-22 tie. Freshman Shawn Calnan landed a kill along with two kills from Zyburt to give the Golden Flyers a 27-25 edge over the Lions.

Nazareth found themselves chasing Penn State Behrend in game three when the Lions led 7-2. Fortunately, the Golden Flyers fired back with five consecutive points tying the set at 7. Sophomore Chris Mahan and junior Brody Cord landed the two kills during the run. Cord also added a service ace. Nazareth held onto their lead, ending the third game 25-17.

The Golden Flyers are on the road competing in the UVC Crossover at Elmira beginning Saturday, March 8th at 11 a.m. against Bard.
