Nazareth Falls Twice At Baruch Invitational

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Fifth-ranked Nazareth closed their matches at the Baruch Invitational with a pair of losses on Saturday. The Golden Flyers fell to seventh-ranked Baruch in three sets by the scores of 25-18, 26-24, 25-21, then were swept by Kean by the scores of 28-26, 25-17, 25-17.

Following the losses, Nazareth stands at 7-5 overall. With their respective victories, Baruch improves to 9-3 overall and Kean improves to 8-6 overall. With their losses, the Golden Flyers had their three-match winning streak snapped. After beating the Golden Flyers, Kean outlasted second-ranked Rivier in five sets, and they stretched their winning streak to six matches. With its victory, Baruch stopped their two-match losing streak and have won six of its last eight matches.

Against Baruch, sophomores Grant Levermore and Tim Zyburt recorded nine kills and eight kills, respectively, for the Golden Flyers' attack. Classmate Chris Mahan and junior Brody Cord each added five additional kills. Junior Nick McDonagh tallied 21 assists to organize Nazareth's offense.

Defensively, junior Luke Lawatsch had a team-high five digs and also had a solo block. McDonagh and sophomore Bobby Beeman combined for seven additional digs while Zyburt had Nazareth's second solo block.

Jack McKee amassed a match-high 14 kills for Baruch's attack. McKee had only two hitting errors for a .429 hitting percentage. Brady Ambro added 10 more kills. Scott Standring totaled 33 assists and Brendan Murphy recorded 14 digs.

Nazareth recorded hitting percentages of .000, .314, and . 241 over the three sets while Baruch had hitting percentages of .154, .500, and .462.

Against Kean, Zyburt amassed a team-high 12 kills while Levermore finished with seven kills. Lawatsch also added six kills with only one error. McDonagh recorded 26 assists as he continued to direct the Golden Flyers' offense.

On the defensive side, Beeman and Levermore each recorded five digs. Zyburt and Lawatsch combined for seven assisted blocks while Levermore had a solo block.

Bez Arslani led Kean with 12 kills. John Cunningham and Ed Jedziniak recorded nine kills and eight kills, respectively.  Ron Dunn finished with a match-high 33 assists while Michael Fox had a match-high 12 digs. Kyle Farley and Dunn each made an impact at the net as both players finished with a solo block and six assisted blocks to thwart several of Nazareth's attempts.

The Golden Flyers are in action again on February 26th when Nazareth travels to Hilbert before returning to the Kidera Gymnasium on the 28th to host Penn State Behrend at 7 p.m. Both matches are United Volleyball Conference matches.
