Nazareth outlasts Medaille in 5

Golden Flyers improve to 5-3 overall

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth overcame a 2-sets-to-1 deficit against 15th-ranked Medaille Wednesday as the Golden Flyers rallied for a five-set men's volleyball victory over the Mavericks in a United Volleyball Conference match. Scores were 27-25, 23-25, 19-25, 25-19, 15-12.

The Golden Flyers, ranked fifth nationally in the most recent Division III poll from the American Volleyball Coaches Association, improved to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in conference matches. Medaille is 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the UVC.

Sophomore Tim Zyburt led the way for Nazareth with 14 kills on 33 swings for a .364 hitting percentage from his outside hitting position. Junior middle blocker Luke Lawatsch added 13 kills and seven blocks and junior setter Nick McDonagh amassed 46 assists with eights digs and three blocks.

Zyburt had three of his kills in the decisive fifth set and sophomore Grant Levermore contributed seven of his team-high 12 digs. The set was tied at 12-12 before Nazareth closed out the match with a kill by Lawatsch, a Medaille hitting error and a service ace by Lawatsch.

Nazareth took a close first set as McDonagh and Chris Mahan combined for a block on set point. Then after dropping sets two and three, The Golden Flyers took set four in convicing fashion thanks to four kills by Lawatsch and three each for Levermore and Zyburt.

Nazareth hit .252 (53-21-127) for the match, while Medaille posted a percentage of .213 (61-31-141). Trevor Barrett led the Mavericks with 19 kills and David Hill added 16. The Golden Flyers are idle this weekend but return to action Feb. 19 for a conference home match against Elmira at 7 p.m
