Nazareth Competes at Empire 8 Championships

Golden Flyers' women's and men's teams each finish Saturday in fifth place

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The women's and men's track and field teams were in action Saturday at the Empire 8 Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Ithaca College. Junior Hannah Brackley and sophomore Gabrielle LeBihan each recorded a pair of school records in the women's meet. In the men's meet, sophomores Brandon Vuolo and Luis Rivera each fell just short of improving on their school records.

In the women's meet, Ithaca won the team title with 168.5 points, followed by Stevens with 73 points and St. John Fisher with 63.5 points. Nazareth placed fifth with 49 points.

Brackley placed first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.03, which edged the facility record by .01 seconds and improved her school record of 1:00.44. Brackley also broke the school record with her third-place finish in the 200-meter dash, which she completed in :26.67. She recorded a time of :26.75 at the SPIRE Open on January 25th. With her second-place finish in the mile, LeBihan broke the 2006 school record held by Laura Snepenger. LeBihan finished in 5:21.39. LeBihan also broke the record in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:48.46, which was nearly 30 seconds faster than the former record of 19:16.52.

Other top performers from the women's meet included junior Michaela Gildemeyer's first-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:23.04), junior Sibongile Chisi's fourth-place in the pole vault (3 meters; 9 ft, 10 7/64 in.), freshman Anna Bertrand's fifth-place finish in the high jump (1.5 m; 4 ft., 11 1/16 in.), and Nazareth's 4x400-meter relay team, which placed fourth. Sophomores Kenzie Coon and Taylor Pierson joined Gildemeyer and Brackley to finish with a time of 4:15.98.

Pierson was also sixth in the 60-meter dash (:8.15) and seventh in the 200-meter event (:27.48). Junior Kate Durr was 16th in the 200 meters (:28.65) and ninth in the high jump (1.45m; 4 ft., 9 3/32 in.). Another top-10 finish on the track was freshman Emily Thompson's 10th-place run in the 5,000-meters, which she finished in 19:23.99.

Sophomore Amanda Entress and senior Jessica Hogan also performed well. Entress was 7th in the long jump (5.05m; 16 ft., 6 13/16 in.) while Hogan was 11th in the 20-pound weight throw (11.51m; 37 ft., 9 5/32 in.).

In the men's meet, the Bombers also claimed the team title with a score of 146 points. St. John Fisher was second with 105 points, followed by Stevens with 97 points. Nazareth was fifth with 32 points.

Rivera claimed first in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 14.42 meters (47 ft., 3 23/32 in.), which was just shy of his 14.84 school-record mark. Vuolo was even closer to his school-record of 13.16 in the shot put as he recorded a mark of 13.14 meters (43 ft.,1 21/64 in.). Vuolo was also ninth in the weight throw with a toss of 12.64 (41 ft., 5 41/64 in.). Sophomore Khiary Gayle also turned in a top-five performance in his field event. He was fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 13.12 meters (43 ft., 17/32 in.).

On the track, senior Jake Lafaver was first in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.92. Zack Lafaver was sixth in the event with a time of 2:03.34. The Golden Flyers took third in the distance medley relay with a time of 11:03.52. Jake and Zack Lafaver were joined in the event by freshmen Jacob Murray and Jenoy Merchant.

Freshman Richardson Pierre and sophomore John O'Malley also recorded top-12 finishes. Pierre had an 11th-place finish in the 60-meter dash (:7.36) and was 11th in the long jump (5.92m; 19 ft., 5 5/64 in.). O'Malley was 12th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.64 seconds.

The Golden Flyers return to Ithaca on February 15th and 16th for the Bomber Invitational.
