ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Newly anointed No. 1 Nazareth made short work of visiting Medaille Wednesday in a United Volleyball Conference match in men's volleyball as the Golden Flyers swept the Mavericks in three sets. Scores were 25-12, 25-17, 25-21.
Nazareth reamined unbeaten overall at 19-0 and 7-0 in UVC matches. Medaille, ranked eighth nationally in Division III, is 11-7 overall and 5-2 in the UVC.
Freshman
Tim Zyburt led the way with 12 kills in 21 attempts for a .476 hitting percentage, while sophomore
Luke Lawatsch was a perfect 9-for-9 in hitting to go with four blocks. Senior
EJ Wells-Spicer contributed 35 assists and four digs. Freshman
Grant Levermore added eight kills and five blocks. Nazareth played without the services of UVC Player of the Week
Rob Kraft, who was out with the flu.
Nazareth surged to a 10-4 lead in the first set and were never seriously challenged. The Golden Flyers had 14 kills overall in the set in 17 attempts for a .824 percentage, led by Levermore's perfect 6-for-6 contribution.
The second set was tied at 10-10 before Nazareth pulled away. Zyburt had five of his kills and Lawatsch added four more and Wells-Spicer had 11 of his assists.
Nazareth had nine hitting errors in the third set, but also had 14 digs with Lawatsch, Zyburt and senior
Dan Mowery each contributing three. Lawatsch and Zyburt each had four more kills.
Trevor Barrett led Medaille with 11 kills in 25 attempts and Cory Phillips had 18 assists.
Both teams are in action this weekend at the UVC Crossover at New Paltz. Nazareth plays seventh-ranked New Paltz Saturday at 9 a.m. and sixth-ranked Stevens at 1 p.m. The Golden flyers also have a match Sunday at 9 a.m. against SUNYIT.
