BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Freshman outside hitter Tim Zyburt banged out a career-best 13 kills to go with a .526 hitting percentage Saturday as fifth-ranked Nazareth scored a three-set sweep over seventh-ranked New York University in United Volleyball Conference action at Medaille College. Scores were 25-20, 25-22, 25-23. The Golden Flyers also defeated 12th-ranked Vassar in three sets in their second match. Scores were 25-20, 25-22, 27-25.

Nazareth, now 7-0 and 2-0 in UVC action, plays Bard Sunday at 11 a.m.

Against NYU, Zyburt's 13 kills came in 19 attempts with just three hitting errors. He also had four blocks. Nazareth hit .382 as a team in the match with 35 kills in 68 swings against just nine hitting errors. Freshman Grant Levermore also played well with nine kills in 20 attempts for a .450 hitting percentage.

Senior Robert Kraft and junior Cole Hutter each had six kills and senior setter EJ Wells-Spicer delivered 34 assists.

Nazareth was comfortably ahead for most of the first set as Kraft and Zyburt each posted three kills. The second set was closer, but Zyburt had kills on Nazareth's last two points to seal the set.

Nazareth trailed in the third set, 10-9, before scoring three straight points to secure the lead for good. Zyburt and Hutter each had kills and NYU had an attack error. NYU closed to within 24-23, but Zyburt struck again with a kill for the final point of the match off an assist from Wells-Spicer.

In the Vassar match, Levermore and freshman Chris Mahan each had eight kills and Zyburt had six. Levermore and Dan Mowery each had six digs.

Nazareth was ahead for the majority of the match until the third set, which seesawed back and forth. After taking a two-sets-to-none lead, the Golden Flyers found themselves tied with Vassar at 25-25 in the third set. Freshman Bobby Beeman then came through with kills on the final two points -- his only two kills of the match -- to clinch the match.
