GENEVA, N.Y. -- Nazareth junior goalie Abbie Carey and her teammates stopped 13th-ranked William Smith's six-game winning streak with a 0-0 tie in Tuesday evening's non-conference soccer contest. The host Herons entered the game outscoring opponents 11-1 in the previous three matches. The Golden Flyers, meanwhile, are unbeaten in their last four matches and entered Tuesday's game outscoring their last three opponents 9-0. Nazareth has gone a stretch of 390 minutes without allowing a goal.

Following the tie, Nazareth stands at 9-4-4 overall. William Smith enters the Liberty League tournament with a 12-2-2 overall record. The Golden Flyers close the regular season with a non-conference game at Skidmore on Saturday, October 27th. Nazareth's drive for the Empire 8 championship begins November 3rd against Stevens. Ithaca, ranked fourth nationally and seeded first for the E8 Tournament, is hosting the championship.

Tuesday's game featured a defensive struggle. Neither team recorded a shot during the first overtime session, however, Nazareth's defense thwarted the Herons' offensive attack in the second overtime. After William Smith put two shots off the mark, the Golden Flyers' defense blocked consecutive shots in a span of five seconds to keep the game scoreless with about four minutes to play in the second overtime. In the final 30 seconds of overtime, the Herons earned a corner kick, but Nazareth's tenacious defense forced the ensuing shot to go over the crossbar.

Sophomore Elizabeth Howell recorded the first shot on goal in the 19th minute. Scoring opportunities were limited in the first 45 minutes as both defenses blocked shots before they reached the goal.

Carey and William Smith goalie, Chelsea Dunay, traded saves to open the second period. Senior Christine Belding's shot was saved by Dunay, while Carey stopped Whitney Frary's attempt. Junior Julia Teran Pulford and freshman Mel Gettys each had shots on goal saved by Dunay during the second half in addition to a second shot by Belding. Carey made additional saves on shots by Frary, and also prevented attempts by Madeline Buckley. Buckley's last shot of the half came with less than three minutes remaining in regulation.

Carey was credited with four saves, and Dunay totaled five saves. Buckley and Frary entered Tuesday's contest with nine goals, and seven goals, respectively. Junior Olivia Derleth came in as the Golden Flyers' leading scorer with nine goals. The Herons held Derleth without a shot.

William Smith finished with a 15-7 advantage in total shots, including a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. The Herons also had a 3-2 edge in corner kick opportunities. In Tuesday's even match, Nazareth was whistled for 11 fouls compared to nine for William Smith. Each team was called for three offsides.
