ROCHESTER, NY – Seven student-athletes and longtime men's and women's volleyball head coach
Cal Wickens will be inducted to the Nazareth Sports Hall of Fame in 2026. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, September 19, 2026 in Callahan Theatre of the Arts Center at Nazareth.
The athletes from the class include dual sport athlete (soccer/basketball) Hillary Simon '11, men's basketball standout Jimmy Evans, men's lacrosse standouts Cam Bomberry and Marcos Santana, Chris DeHority '09 UG, '11 GR (men's volleyball), Dominik Gabaj '17(men's hockey) and Kelly (Miranda) Kanellis '08 (field hockey).
Simon earns a nod to the hall of fame after being a standout goalkeeper for the women's soccer team, being named all-conference all four seasons, including 3x on the first team. In 2010 she was named the Empire Defensive Player of the Year and was named second-team all-region. Simon had a four-year goals-against average of 0.92 with a .856 save percentage and 24 shutouts. Her 404 career saves rank third on the Nazareth all-time list. The two-time captain in 2009 and 2010 helped Nazareth to a four-year mark of 48-28-6, including 26-5-1 in the Empire 8 with one NCAA berth (2008) and one ECAC title (2007). On the basketball court, Simon was a backup center, scoring 131 points and grabbing 195 rebounds. She capped her career being named Nazareth's Robert A. Kidera Scholar-Athlete award.
Evans, who played 55 games for Nazareth over two seasons from 2001-03, scored 1,087 points and averaged 19.8 points for the Golden Flyers. He also collected 94 steals, 239 assists, and 301 rebounds. As a senior he was the Empire 8 Player of the Year and a first team selection. He was also a first team d3hoops.com and NABC all-region selection. As a junior, he was a second team All-Empire 8 selection. Evans was instrumental in helping Nazareth defeat #2-ranked Rochester in the JPMorgan Chase Tournament title game in which he was named MVP.
Bomberry played four seasons on the men's lacrosse team from 1991-1994, helping Nazareth win its first NCAA title in 1992. For his career, he recorded 154 points in 54 games on 84 goals and 70 assists. His 154 points and 70 assists sit among the all-time best in program history. He was a three-time USILA All-American in 1992 (third team), 1993 (third team), and 1994 (second team).
Santana was a member of the men's lacrosse team from 1993-1997. He played a big role for the Golden Flyers during their 1996 and 1997 national championship winning teams on defense. He was a USILA All-American three times coming in 1995 (honorable mention), 1996 (third team), and 1997 (second team). He also recorded 113 ground balls throughout his career.
DeHority made his mark for the men's volleyball team as the libero from 2006-2009. He is far and away the program leader in digs with 1,156. He averaged 3.03 digs per set as a senior and 2.69 digs per set throughout his career at Libero. Over his 4 seasons, Nazareth went 99-28. DeHority was a two-time first team North East Collegiate Volleyball Association Western Division All-Star. He also had 227 kills on a .346 attack percentage for his career.
Gabaj becomes the third men's hockey player to be added to the hall of fame, joining Ed Zdolshek '16 and Scott Dawson '16. One of the purest scorers in program history, Gabaj was the first-ever all-american for the program, picking up second team CCM All-American honors as a senior. Upon graduation, Gabaj was Nazareth's all-time leading scorer in just three seasons with 33 goals and 36 assists for 69 career points in 75 games played. In his senior season he was named the ECAC West Player of the Year after leading Naz with 18 goals and 10 assists. He was a two-time all-conference selection.
Rounding out the athletes is Miranda who was a four-year field hockey standout for the Golden Flyers, including helping the team win its lone Empire 8 title in 2007 as the team captain. She totaled 50 career points on 18 goals and 14 assists, including 11 goals and nine assists in 2007. She ranks among the all-time leaders in scoring and holds marks for most assists in a season (9) and most assists in a game (3). She was Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year in 2007 and a North Atlantic Regional all-star after leading the Golden Flyers to a 14-6 overall record, the E8 title and a berth in the ECAC Upstate Tournament.
Wickens began coaching the women's volleyball team in 2003-04 and shortly after started the men's volleyball program at Nazareth in 2005, quickly establishing the Golden Flyers as one of the top teams in Division III. Wickens had more the 800 wins between the men's and women's volleyball programs at Nazareth. On the men's side he went 436-189 (.698 win percentage) and on the women's side, he was 407-273, (.599 win percentage). In 2011 Wickens led the men's team to a Division III national championship with four Nazareth players earning All-America honors and Wickens was chosen Division III Coach of the Year as the Golden Flyers went 31-3. Wickens hit 20 wins in a season for the 12th time in his career in 2024. His 21-year men's coaching record of 436-189 (.701) includes a 76-47 record in United Volleyball Conference matches with conference titles in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Wickens took over the Nazareth women's program prior to the 2003 season and promptly guided the Golden Flyers to the Empire 8 Conference title as well as their fourth straight trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament. In total, he helped the women's team win six Empire 8 championships.
