Saturday's game was played in honor of Nazareth's six seniors as they played their last home game in Golden Flyer Stadium --
Amanda Sudore,
Sarah Eichelberger,
Christine Belding,
Kassandra Prutsman,
Emily Van Gorder and
Katie Wyant.
Play in the first half was controlled by the Golden Flyers with a total of 11 shots to three. Their best scoring opportunity came in the 25th minute when junior
Olivia Derleth sent a through ball to Eichelberger, who challenged Hartwick's goalkeeper, Hope Brown, to make the save. The Golden Flyers played a physical first half to maintain control all over the field. The half ended scoreless.
In the second half Nazareth continued to control the play, leading up to the only goal of the game. The goal came as a result of a corner kick by freshman
Mel Gettys, who drove the ball into the box, finding the head of Derleth. Derleth was able to find the inside of the goal at the near post. It was Derleth's team-leading ninth goal and Gettys' fifth assist.
Minutes later Hartwick counter-attacked and created a dangerous scoring opportunity that was shut down by Nazareth's
Abbie Carey, who finished with two saves for her fourth shutout of the season. Play between the Golden Flyers and the Hawks was physical, but Nazareth was able to stay composed and fight them off to keep the lead and earn the win.
Nazareth had a 23-6 edge in shots and a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks. Nazareth returns to action Wednesday at home against Alfred at 4 p.m.
