Geneseo edges Nazareth in ot, 2-1

Golden Flyers suffer first E8 defeat

GENESEO, N.Y. -- Visiting Geneseo scored the game-winning goal just 1:24 into the first overtime period Wednesday as the Blue Knights took a 2-1 women's soccer victory over Nazareth in a non-conference game at Golden Flyer Stadium.

The loss was the first of the season for Nazareth, now 1-1-2 overall. Geneseo improved to 5-1 overall. Nazareth is on the road again Saturday for a non-conference game at St. Lawrence at 2 p.m.

Wednesday's game was the first at home for the Golden Flyers, who led 1-0 at halftime on the strength of a goal by junior Amanda Sudore. Her shot actually deflected off the head of a Geneseo defender at the 25-minute mark and sailed over the head of Geneseo keeper Julie Sanger.

Geneseo evened the score early in the second half as Anne Beinetti settled a through pass from Shannon Spusta and slipped a shot past Nazareth goalie Abbie Carey for her seventh goal of the early season.

Nazareth had the best opportunity to untie the score in the second half whe junior Christine Belding ripped a shot from about 25 yards away that deflected off the crossbar in the 62nd minute.

The 1-1 score went unchanged until early in overtime as Spusta delivered a pass to Kelly Bergin on the left wing and she pushed a shot past Carey for the winning score.

Geneseo had advantages in shots (16-12) and corner kicks (5-3).
