Nazareth sweeps SUNYIT

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Junior Hans Schroeder had a match-high 12 kills and freshman EJ Wells-Spicer had 13 assists and six service aces Wednesday as host Nazareth defeated SUNYIT in a men's volleyball match, 3-0. Scores were 30-23, 30-15, 30-19.

Nazareth, ranked 14th nationally in Division III, improved to 2-4 overall and 2-1 against NECVA Western Division opponents. SUNYIT is 3-7 overall.

Schroeder sat out Nazareth's match last week against D'Youville with an ankle injury, but returned Wednesday to produce a .667 hitting percentage for the Golden Flyers, who hit .531 as a team with 42 kills overall against just eight hitting errors. Seven of Schroeder's kills came in the last set.

The first set was close for a while, with Nazareth ahead 15-14 following a kill by SUNYIT's Jeff Coon. Nazareth then scored five straight points to pull away. Junior Patrick Ribec started the run with a kill, junior Ellis Walsh added a kill, junior Will Siwy had a service ace and Ribec and Walsh combined for a block to make the score 20-14.

In the second set, Nazareth raced to a 6-1 lead as Wells-Spicer contributed three service aces. Nazareth was comfortably ahead the rest of the way and Wells-Spicer closed out the set with three more aces.

Walsh and junior Chris Mendez each had six kills and senior Kevin Kirchhoff had 15 assists. Ryan Meller had 11 kills for the Wildcats and Jonathan Brochu had 25 assists.
