ALFRED, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth tuned up for post-season play Sunday by downing Alfred in the teams' men's basketball regular-season finale, 64-51.
Nazareth finished the regular season in third place in the Empire 8 Conference standings with a conference record of 11-5 and an overall mark of 16-9. Alfred finished 11-14 overall and 4-12 in conference games. The Golden Flyers will compete in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament next Friday and Saturday at St. John Fisher. Nazareth will play second-place Ithaca in a first-round game Friday while Fisher will play either RIT or Stevens. RIT defeated Stevens Sunday, 91-75, but the Ducks can clinch the final playoff spot with a win over Elmira Tuesday.
Senior
Corey McAdam led a group of four players that scored in double figures for the Golden Flyers. He also had seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. McAdam is now tied for third place on Nazareth's all-time scoring list with 1,791 career points.
Freshman
Dan Waldbillig equaled a career-high with 14 points. Sophomore
Phil Scaffidi combined 12 points with nine rebounds and sophomore
Jason Corletta scored 11 with nine rebounds.
Nazareth used an 8-0 run midway through the first half to break a 13-13 tie to take the lead for good. Two baskets by Waldbillig and one each from McAdam and Scaffidi enabled Nazareth to gain control.
The lead grew to 13 just before halftime as Corletta hit a three-pointer in the closing minute. Alfred scored the final basket of the half as Nazareth settled for a 38-27 lead.
Nazareth was never seriously challenged in the second half as the lead grew as large as 15 points, 62-47, following a pair of free throws by Corletta with 6:02 left.
Nazareth shot 26 for 54 from the field (48.1 percent) and 10 for 14 from the foul line. The Golden Flyers also enjoyed a 35-32 rebounding advantage.
