Nazareth defeats Alfred, 72-62

Golden Flyers host Stevens Saturday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Sophomore Greg Lothridge recorded a career-high 16 points and seven blocks to lead host Nazareth to a 72-62 victory over Alfred in an Empire 8 men's basketball game. Freshman Tyshun Stephens added a team-high 18 points for the Golden Flyers.

With the victory, Nazareth improves to 13-6 overall and 8-2 in Empire 8 games. The Saxons fall to 7-10 overall and 1-8 in the conference with the loss. With St. John Fisher's loss to Stevens, the Golden Flyers trail the Cardinals in the conference standings by just one game.

Alfred kept the game close for the first 30 minutes by connecting on three-point baskets and converting its free throw opportunities. The Saxons finished 10-16 (63 percent) from behind the arc and 10-12 (83 percent) from the free throw line.

With the game tied 53-53 and about nine minutes remaining, Nazareth went on a 16-4 scoring run to take a commanding 69-57 lead with 1:21 to play. Senior Corey McAdam started the run with a layup, which was followed by a layup from sophomore Phil Scaffidi and two free throws from McAdam. The run continued with a two-point jumper from Lothridge, a three-point basket by Stephens, and a steal and layup by McAdam. Lothridge culminated the run with a two-handed dunk after receiving a pass from McAdam.

The Saxons cut the Golden Flyers' lead to seven points with 45 seconds to play, but Nazareth connected on three of its four free throws in the final 38 seconds to secure the victory.

In addition to the points from Lothridge and Stephens, McAdam and Scaffidi tallied 16 points and 12 points, respectively. McAdam also added eight assists and six rebounds while Stephens finished with a game-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Jason Corletta also added nine points to the Golden Flyers offensive attack.

Gary Kwiecien and Mike Stopera recorded 17 points and 13 points, respectively. Sean Curran had 10 points while Jared Patt recorded nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.
