BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Tournament MVP
Corey McAdam scored a game-high 18 points Saturday as visiting Nazareth pulled away for a 72-61 men's basketball victory over Buffalo State in the championship game of the Coles Classic.
McAdam, one of five Golden Flyers' players who scored in double figures for the second night in a row, went a perfect 12 for 12 from the free-throw line as the Golden Flyers improved to 2-1 overall. The host Bengals are 1-1.
Freshman
Tyshun Stephens also represented the Golden Flyers on the all-tournament team as he scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds against the Bengals. Freshman
Dan Waldbillig contributed 12 points and seven rebounds and sophomores
Jason Corletta and
Phil Scaffidi each scored 11 points. Scaffidi also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
"We battled hard all night and made some free throws down the stretch," said Nazareth Coach
Kevin Broderick. "They pressured us hard at times, but we didn't let up."
The game was close most of the way and was tied for the 10th and final time at 53-53 when Waldbillig scored on a tip in with 7:04 left. Nazareth then embarked on a 14-4 scoring spree that ended with the Golden Flyers on top 67-57 with 2:14 left.
Corletta's basket with 6:33 left gave Nazareth the lead for good. Then McAdam scored with 6:07 left to increase the lead to 57-53. Scaffidi added three baskets,
Jake Fladd made a layup and McAdam sank two free throws to complete the scoring run.
Buffalo State led by as many as nine points, 15-6, early in the first half before the Golden Flyers rallied to take a two-point lead, 25-23, on a pair of free throws by Stephens with 5:03 left in the half. The Bengals regained the lead and settled for a one-point advantage, 34-33, at halftime.
The lead then bounced back and forth early in the second half before Nazareth finally gained control in the last seven minutes.
The victory came at the expense of a poor shooting night from three-point range, where Nazareth made only 4 of 22 shots (18.2 percent). The Golden Flyers shot 22 for 58 (37.9 percent) overall. The Bengals, meanwhile went 0 for 8 from long distance and 21 for 52 (40.4 percent) overall. Nazareth had a 41-36 rebounding advantage.
Glenroy Carr scored 13 points for Buffalo State and all-tournament team representative Jake Simmons added 12. Buffalo State's Norman Simmons also made the all-tournament team along with Marietta's Kevin Knab and Pitt-Bradford's Sam Moore.
The tournament title was Nazareth's second at the Coles Classic in eight appearances, the last one coming in 2001.
