Billy Gimello recorded a team-high 14 kills to lead Nazareth to a three-set (30-22, 30-24, 30-20) victory over visiting D'Youville in a North East Collegiate Volleyball Association match. Senior
Frank Leahy finished with a match-high 31 assists for the Golden Flyers, who are ranked eighth nationally in Division III.
Nazareth took an early 7-0 lead in the first set and stretched its lead to 10 points, 25-15, before winning the set by the score of 30-22. Senior
Joe Petzoldt played just the first set and tallied a team-high six kills while senior
Kelvin Rolle recorded five of his seven kills during the first set.
The Spartans held a 14-10 lead in the second set before the Golden Flyers rallied to score 20 of the next 28 points to win the set. Senior
Ryan Johnsen recorded back-to-back service aces to tie the score, then give Nazareth a 16-15 advantage. Sophomore
Will Siwy recorded all six of his kills late in the second set to secure the Golden Flyers' victory.
Nazareth controlled play in the third set and outscored the Spartans 6-1 in the final seven points to win the match. Junior
Kevin Kirchhoff recorded 11 assists in the final set while senior
Chris DeHority finished with a team-high eight digs during the match. The Golden Flyers also finished the match with an 11-4 advantage in service aces.
D'Youville was led by Matt Frey, who tallied a match-high 16 kills and a team-high 11 digs. Jeremy Sajdak recorded a team-high 22 assists for the Spartans.
Nazareth hosts Medaille in another NECVA match February 3rd at 7 p.m.
