MONTCLAIR, NJ (nazathletics.com) - Nazareth Women's Volleyball (2-9) fell to Montclair State (9-4, 0-1) and Misericordia (6-4, 1-0), in three sets, Saturday afternoon inside Panzer Athletic Center.
GAME ONE: MONTCLAIR STATE 3, NAZARETH 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nazareth took an early 4-2 lead behind a Leah Fusilli kill and Montclair State errors, but the Red Hawks gradually pulled ahead. Kills by Fusilli, Macy Quibell, Lorianna Mattutat and Alana Lucey helped the Golden Flyers cut the deficit to 20-15 before Montclair State closed out the set, 25-19.
- Montclair State used a 7-1 run to build a 12-4 lead in the second set, but Nazareth battled back behind kills from Fusilli and other Golden Flyers to make it 19-15. Fusilli added consecutive kills late to cut the deficit to 24-22, but Montclair State finished the set, 25-22.
- Nazareth fell behind 10-3 in the third set before responding with five straight points, including kills by Alana Lucey and Fusilli, to pull within 10-8. After Montclair State regained a 17-9 lead, Sloane Bell had two kills and Gretchen Klossner added an ace during a 4-0 run that made it 19-15, but the Red Hawks closed out the set, 25-17.
GAME NOTES
- Leah Fusilli led the Golden Flyers with 11 kills in the first match of the afternoon, her sixth contest with double digit kills this fall. She added eight digs for a team-high 11 points.
- Gretchen Klossner contributed 13 digs in the Golden Flyer back row, her sixth match in double figure digs this season.
- Hailey Trank registered 18 assists to add to her team-best 179 helpers so far this fall.
GAME TWO: MISERICORDIA 3, NAZARETH 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Nazareth fell behind 5-2 early but answered with a 3-2 run, including an Anna Malbone ace and Leah Fusilli kill, to make it 7-5. Misericordia then built a 14-6 lead before Nazareth rallied to within 21-17 behind kills from Fusilli and Macy Quibell and another Malbone ace. The Golden Flyers fell, 25-20.
- Misericordia opened the second set with a 15-0 run before Lorianna Mattutat put Nazareth on the board with a kill. The Golden Flyers later used kills from Fusilli, Lake Ziober and Alana Lucey to cut the deficit to 21-8, but Misericordia closed out the set, 25-12.
- Nazareth stayed close early in the third, trading points to a 5-5 tie before Misericordia used a 6-0 run to go ahead 11-6. Lucey and Fusilli helped the Golden Flyers trim the deficit to 16-9, but Misericordia pulled away again and finished with a 25-12 win.
GAME NOTES
- Leah Fusilli registered a team-high eight kills in the second match of the afternoon, along with seven digs and an assist.
- Gretchen Klossner chipped in eight more digs against the Cougars, bringing her daily total to 21 across two matches.

Nazareth returns home to open Empire 8 action against Houghton, Friday, Oct. 2. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. inside Kidera Gymnasium.
