ROCHESTER, NY (nazathletics.com) - Nazareth Women's Volleyball (2-10, 0-1) dropped its first Empire 8 match of the season to Houghton (6-8, 1-0), 3-1, Friday night inside Kidera Gymnasium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Houghton opened the match with a 10-0 run, forcing an early Nazareth timeout. The Golden Flyers gradually chipped away at the deficit, pulling within 15-20, but Houghton closed out the set, 25-15.
- Houghton again jumped out to an early lead, 6-1, but Nazareth battled back behind Leah Fusilli and Alana Lucey to pull within 11-15. The Golden Flyers continued to close the gap, getting within 17-19, before Houghton scored the final six points to win, 25-18.
- After trailing 2-5, Nazareth answered with a 9-2 run to take an 11-7 lead, with Gretchen Klossner delivering two aces during the rally. The Golden Flyers extended their advantage to 18-8 before Houghton briefly cut the deficit to seven, but Nazareth pulled away again to win, 25-15.
- Nazareth took an early 5-3 lead before Houghton responded with a 5-0 run to go ahead, 8-5. The Golden Flyers pulled within 8-10, but Houghton used another five-point run to build a 15-8 advantage. Nazareth continued to battle, cutting the deficit to 17-24, before Houghton closed out the set, 25-17.
GAME NOTES
- Leah Fusilli led the Golden Flyers with 12 kills and 13.5 points, her seventh match this fall with double digit kills.
- Alana Lucey also registered double digit digs against the Highlanders with 10, her third contest of the season in double figures.
- Gretchen Klossner picked up 16 digs in the Golden Flyer back row, her seventh game for Nazareth with double digit digs.
