Men's Lacrosse Squeezes Past Ithaca in a Nail-biting 9-8 Victory

ROCHESTER, NY - On Wednesday evening, Nazareth edged out Ithaca with two late-game goals to overcome the Bombers 9-8. In the win, Owen Riley, Matthew Farrington, and William O'Neill each had three points.

Nazareth now stands with a winning record of 3-2 while Ithaca drops to even at 2-2.

The game opened with a low-scoring first quarter. Ithaca threw the first punch with a goal at the 12:55 mark. Minutes later, Farrington scored his first goal of the game, getting around a defender to place the ball in the net on the lower right side. The game remained 1-1 heading into the second quarter.

In the second, Nazareth came out strong going on a 3-0 run. At the 11:30 mark, Riley scored his first goal on a man-up opportunity off of a well-placed pass from Louis Cogliandro. Farrington scored his second goal of the game with just under four minutes to go, once again unassisted. Less than a minute later, Quinn McKercher was able to find the back of the net to put Nazareth up 4-1. However, in uder two minutes of play at the end of the second, the Bombers were able to net two more goals to send the game into halftime at a score of 4-3.

At the start of the second half, Ithaca scored in under two minutes to tie the game up. Another Bombers goal at the 9:22 mark gave Ithaca the edge back with a 5-4 lead. Following a save from McLean Ralston with 8:15 left in the quarter, the Golden Flyers were able to clear the ball for a scoring opportunity. It took two shots for Nazareth to score, McKercher the one to connect with the back of the net from an assist by Farrington.

After allowing the Bombers to score again, O'Neill put one past the Ithaca goalie from William Meagher to bring the game back to a tie at 6-6. With just over a minute left in the quarter Ithaca was able to score off of a Nazareth turnover to put the pressure on the Golden Flyers heading into the final quarter as the Bombers led 7-6.

Despite a few shots early on from the Golden Flyers, Nazareth couldn't get on the board before Ithaca put up another goal five minutes into play to gain a two goal lead. With 9:07 left in regulation, Ralston had another save and sent the ball forward for the Flyers to have a clear. Once again, it took Nazareth two shots to find the back of the net, this time Meagher from O'Neill to cut the deficit to one at 8-7.

With three minutes and 20 seconds left, Riley placed a perfect pass to a cutting Cogliandro who put it past the goalie in the lower left corner to tie the game up at 8-8. One minute later, Riley had a goal of his own from O'Neill to put Nazareth up 9-8.

One minute remaining, Meagher took a shot, but the Bomber's goalkeeper was there to save it. The goalie sent the ball up the field in a clear attempt. With 55 seconds left, O'Neill forced a turnover and picked up the ground ball to give Nazareth possession in a crucial time. O'Neill's stop helped hold the Bombers to eight goals and Nazareth took the win 9-8.

The Golden Flyers will be back in action on March 8th at SUNY Canton at 3 p.m. as they take on Saint Lawrence.
