BROCKPORT, N.Y. - Nazareth Women's Basketball lost on the road on Friday night to undefeated SUNY Brockport in a close game.
With the loss Nazareth drops to 16-5 overall and 10-2 in the conference, while Brockport improves to 19-2 overall and 12-0 in conference play.
The first quarter started out in Nazareth's favor, the Golden Flyers jumping out to an early 7-0 lead. But, with three minutes left in the quarter, Brockport finally tied up the game at 11, and with two minutes left, the Golden Eagles surpassed the Golden Flyers. Brockport closed the quarter out with an 11 point run to hold a 22-13 lead heading into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, Nazareth shot an impressive 60 percent from the field, and with four minutes left in the half, the Golden Flyers had cut Brockport's lead to three. However, that's as close as the Flyers would get, as Brockport extended its lead back to six at 40-34 by the end of the quarter.
Within three minutes of gameplay in the second half, Nazareth cut Brockport's lead down to two and with under three minutes left in the third quarter, the Golden Flyers were still down by two. But once again, Brockport began to pull away and the quarter ended in favor of the Golden Eagles 56-52.
In the fourth quarter, Brockport began to pull away and Nazareth could not recover from the deficit, giving Brockport the 85-72 win.
Molly Benetti led the team in points with 22, while also adding five rebounds and two blocks.
Sarina McDowell was Nazareth's next highest scorer with 17 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Katie MacLachlan was the third Golden Flyer in double-digits with 10, while also dishing out four assists and grabbing three boards.
Kiara Anglin led the team in rebounds with eight, while also adding five points and three assists.
Leah Fusilli tallied five points, five boards, and four assists.
Brayden Schultz had four points four the Flyers, along with two rebounds, while
Madilann Johnson added three points and three rebounds.
Madalyn Kelly,
Morgan Caraballo, and
Tessa Schuey each added a pair of points to the scoreboard.
The Golden Flyers will be back in action February 8 at 2 p.m. as they travel to SUNY Geneseo.
