GENESEO, N.Y. - Nazareth women's basketball lost a hard-fought battle to Geneseo on Saturday afternoon 75-59.
With the loss, Nazareth's record drops to 16-6 overall and 10-3 in the Empire 8 conference, while Geneseo improves to 17-5 overall and 12-1 in conference play.
The entire first quarter was almost completely even, neither team holding a lead of more than two possessions. With 2 minutes and 30 seconds left in the quarter, Nazareth was down 10-9. But Geneseo went on a six-point run in those final moments to take the lead 16-9 heading into the second quarter.
Geneseo's run continued to open the second quarter, adding four more points before allowing Nazareth to score. The Knights' lead hovered at about 10 for most of the remainder of the quarter until Geneseo went up by 18, where the lead would stay heading into the second half.
In the third quarter, Geneseo continued to slowly build its lead and the Golden Flyers struggled to come back from the deficit. Heading into the final quarter the score was 60-40 in favor of the Knights.
The fourth quarter was Nazareth's best shooting performance, going 53.85% from the field, and in the quarter the Golden Flyers actually outscored the Knights 19-15. But those points were not quite enough to bring Nazareth back and the Knights took the victory at a score of 75-59.
Sarina McDowell was the only Golden Flyer in double-digits with 12.
Kiara Anglin and
Payton Littlefield each tallied nine points.
Molly Benetti and
Madilann Johnson both scored eight for the Flyers, while
Tessa Schuey and
Brayden Schultz added five a piece.
Katie MacLachlan and
Leah Fusilli also added points to the scoreboard with two and one.
The Golden Flyers will be back at home on February 14th for a 5:30 conference showdown against Russell Sage College.
