ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth men's hockey program delivered a night to remember on Saturday, upending #5 Geneseo 7-4 on Senior Night in the final home contest coached by longtime Golden Flyers coach,
George Roll. The win over the Knights was a 180 from the meeting less than 24 hours earlier, where Nazareth fell 9-1 at the Knights barn.
Nazareth is now 8-15-2 overall and 4-14-2 in UCHC play, while Geneseo falls to 20-4-1 and 16-3-1 in the UCHC. The Golden Flyers will be the No. 5 seed for the upcoming UCHC Championships and travel to No. 4 Chatham on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in a quarterfinal matchup.
It was a full circle moment for coach Roll on Saturday for his Golden Flyers coaching career. Roll, who was hired to lead the brand new Nazareth men's hockey program in 2012, coached his first-ever contest against Geneseo on October 18, 2012, a dramatic 3-2 overtime victory at the then "Sports Centre at MCC." On Saturday, Roll coached the Golden Flyers for the last time at the Tim Hortons Iceplex for a thrilling win against one of the top teams in the nation.
The special night began with Nazareth honoring its 10 seniors,
Josh Dressler,
Anthony Quinlivan,
Griffin Green,
Christian Cupani,
Ethan Louisos,
Jeremy Swartz,
Liam Quinlivan,
Joey Schaefer,
Keith Davenport, at
Matt Sayles.
That was followed up by honoring coach Roll's 37 years of involvement in hockey, including 28 as a head coach. The athletic department then presented Roll with a mural that included pictures of each Nazareth team he coached, followed by brief remarks from Ed Zdolshek and Julius Tamasy, members of the first-ever men's hockey team.
Will Halecki scored the lone goal in the opening period from
Josh Dressler to make it 1-0.
The Golden Flyers responded to two consecutive goals from the Knights, with three-straight to end the second to take a 4-2 lead into the second intermission.
Liam Quinlivan used a great skating effort to open space for
Charles Ross to rip from the point and even the score at 2.
Later in the period,
Anthony Quinlivan followed up his own rebound to give Nazareth the lead back.
Keith Davenport followed that goal up with his first tally of the season, crashing to the net, and finishing off a pass from
Charles Ross.
Nazareth got an important fifth goal from
Cole Bauman 4:08 into the third. Geneseo goaltender Jacob Torgner dove to clear the puck, but Bauman beat him to the spot and put in the goal.
Feeling the pressure of Geneseo while holding a 5-3 lead, senior
Joey Schaefer came up big to score Nazareth's sixth goal with under four minutes to play on the empty net.
Geneseo added another goal to make it 6-4 before a great effort to steal the puck and score an empty netter from
Blake Frost concluded the scoring.
Sayles made 30 saves in net, including 18 in the third period.
