ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Men's basketball defeated Hartwick 88-75 for their senior day on Saturday.
Jack Broderick,
Marcus Shepard,
Gabe Lucarelli, and
Liam Hopwood were the four seniors that were honored in the ceremony prior to the game.
Luke Insley had a double-double in the win.
With the win, Nazareth is now 15-9 overall and 10-5 in the Empire 8, while Hartwick dropped to 3-21 overall and 3-12 in the conference.
In the first half, Hartwick threw the first punch, going up 10-2 in the first four minutes of game play. Nazareth was unable to close the gap until the Golden Flyers went on a 15-point run late in the half to go up 37-30 with under two minutes left. Nazareth's lead held strong at seven for the remainder of the half, and the score was 40-33 heading into the second.
Scoring in the first half for the Golden Flyers was J. Broderick and
Tyler Putney with 13 each,
Jaylen Savage with five, Insley and
Solomon McFarlane each with three, and
Merritt Holly with one.
In the second half, Nazareth shot an impressive 54.29 percent from the field to help them score 48 points over the half. Nazareth's seven point lead expanded to double digits in the first possession of the second half with a three from Putney. Though the Hawks were able to cut Nazareth's lead down to four with just under 13 minutes left to play, Hartwick could not come back from the deficit, and Nazareth took the 13 point win at a score of 88-75.
Insley's double-double was made up by 15 points and 11 assists, while Insley also grabbed six rebounds. Putney led the scoring efforts for the Flyers with 21 points and five rebounds. Savage added 16 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals to the board. J. Broderick finished the game with 13 points and four rebounds, while Holly had 11 points and a team high of eight boards. McFarlane was the sixth Golden Flyer in double figures with 10 points. Lucarelli had was Nazareth's last scorer with two points and two rebounds. Hopwood and Shepard grabbed four and one rebound respectively.
The Golden Flyers will be back at home on February 18th at 7:30 p.m. as they take on crosstown rival St. John Fisher in a Battle of the Beaks showdown.
