Golden Flyers Soar Past Gwynedd Mercy Women's Hoops

Box Score GWYNEDD VALLEY, P.A. - Women's Basketball took down Gwynedd Mercy Universtiy on Friday afternoon in a 78-62 victory. In the win, five Golden Flyers were in double-digits, for a well-rounded finish from Nazareth. Kiara Anglin had a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

The win puts Nazareth's record at 7-3, while Gwynedd Mercy drops to 4-9.

A very back-and-forth game for the two teams, Nazareth threw the first punch, leading the Griffins by eight halfway through the first quarter, the biggest lead of the game until the third quarter. However, the Griffins swung back and tied the game up with one minute left in the quarter. By the second, Gwynedd was beating the Golden Flyers by five.

In the first quarter, Molly Benetti led the scoring with six points, while teammate Katie MacLachlan added five. Sarina McDowell and Anglin both added a three.

In the second quarter, Nazareth was able to take the lead by two with one minute and 30 seconds left, but the Griffins once again fought back and the Golden Flyers trailed by four heading into the second half.

Madalyn Kelly led the scoring in the second quarter with seven points. McDowell and MacLachlan added four and three respectively, while Leah Fusilli added two. Benetti and Anglin each added one freethrow to the score.

In the third quarter, Nazareth had a run of 13 points while holding Gwynedd scoreless until there was three minutes left in the quarter. The Griffins then went on a 10 point run while holding Nazareth scoreless to make the score 50-49 in favor of the Golden Flyers heading into the final quarter.

McDowell led the scoring in the third with nine, while teammates Benetti and Kelly added four and two respectively.

The fourth quarter was Nazareth's strongest, shooting 83.33% from the field and 60% from the three. Nazareth controlled the fourth quarter from the beginning, not allowing the Griffins to get within one possession after the first basket of the quarter. The Golden Flyers outscored the Griffins 28-13 in the fourth, and took the 78-62 victory.

Benetti led the scoring in the fourth with 11 points, while Kelly added eight and Anglin added six. MacLachlan also added a behind-the-arc bucket in the quarter.

The Golden Flyers' scoring was led by Benetti with 22, who also added seven rebounds, five blocks, and three assists. Anglin was a monster on the boards with 14, while also tallying 10 points and six assists for a double-double. Kelly had 17 points, five assists, and three rebounds. McDowell added 16 points, and seven rebounds. MacLachlan had 11 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Fusilli had six rebounds while also adding a bucket.

The Golden Flyers will be back on the road on the 7th at 5:30 p.m. as they head to Houghton for the second league game of the season.
