FREDONIA, NY– Freshman Morgan Russo had three hits while senior Megan Pum tallied two hits for the Nazareth University Softball team but it was not enough as the Golden Flyers dropped a pair of games at SUNY Fredonia in the final games of the season.
Nazareth lost an 8-0 decision in the opener and fell 7-2 in the second game of the doubleheader.
In the first game, Fredonia (13-21 overall) jumped to an early 5-0 lead through the first two innings of the game. Four out of the five runs were unearned.
Nazareth (4-30 overall) had their first base runner in the fourth inning with a single up the middle by Pum. Pum collected the lone hit for the Golden Flyers in the first game.
Fredonia scored three runs in the bottom frame of the fifth inning to stretch the lead to 8-0 which resulted in a game ending eight run rule.
In game two of the doubleheader, Russo led off with an infield single. Sophomore Maddy Spakoski nailed a hit down the left field line to score Russo for the early 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The Blue Devils answered back immediately with three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead 3-1.
After a series of consecutive hits, Fredonia extended their lead 5-1 in the bottom of the second inning.
Russo tacked on another run for the Golden Flyers with a solo home run to left center field notching her fourth of the season. The score was 5-2 after the third inning.
Fredonia added one run in both the fifth and sixth inning to further secure their lead to 7-2.
With runners in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh inning, Nazareth came up empty for a final score of 7-2.
Nazareth scattered seven hits during game two as Russo led going 3 for 4 with a home run. Pum, Spakoski, freshmen Haleigh Suitor and Anna Spencer each registered a hit for the Golden Flyers.
