ROCHESTER, NY - The #2-ranked Nazareth men's lacrosse team officially slayed the dragon on May 17, 1992 as the Golden Flyers defeated long-time nemesis, and #1 ranked Hobart, 13-12 in overtime to advance to the NCAA Division III Championship game. Marty Kelly's goal :24 seconds into overtime lifted Nazareth into the championship game, it defeated Roanoke 22-11 for its first lacrosse national title.
The win over Hobart broke an 0-8 all-time record against the Statesmen for Nazareth, including 0-3 in postseason play. Nazareth lost 17-12 in 1988, 14-10 in 1989, and 19-17 in 1991.
The Statesmen had an unprecedented reign on Division III lacrosse, winning 12-straight NCAA Championships before being knocked off by Nazareth in 1992.
The game was watched before a crowd of nearly 7,500 fans.
Kelly finished with five goals in the win, while Jeremy Hollenbeck added three, and Brian Silcott tallied two.
Nazareth goalie Greg Gebhardt made 19 saves in net.
