Men’s Volleyball Rallies to Cap Weekend with Two Wins

HUNTINGDON, PA – Junior Josh Weaver delivered a career-high 21 kills as the Nazareth University Men's Volleyball team posted a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Virginia Wesleyan to cap a 2-0 day on the second day of the Juniata Tournament in Pennsylvania.

Earlier in the day, Nazareth (14-7) downed Calvin (MI) 3-1.

In the Calvin match, Nazareth battled back-and-forth with the Knights before a service error followed by an ace by freshman Joe Seliger to secure a 27-25 win in the opening set.

Calvin tied the match with a 25-22 win in the second set before the Golden Flyers rallied for set wins of 25-15 and 25-18 to win the four-set match.

Junior Alex Bertino led the offense with 12 kills, fellow junior Max Stuver added 26 assists and sophomore Andrew Bodensteiner had four aces and three blocks. Stuver and Bertino were named to the All-Tournament team.

In the second match of the day against Virginia Wesleyan, Nazareth rallied for a 27-25 win in the second set after falling 25-22 in the opening set. The Marlins went up 2-1 with a 25-21 win in the third set before Nazareth came back for a 25-20 win to force the tiebreaker fifth set.

The Golden Flyers held a lead of 10-5 in the fifth set but the Marlins rallied to trim the lead to 10-9. The teams traded points with Nazareth scoring on kills by Weaver and graduate student Jonathon Jackson before Weaver recorded his 21st kill of the match for the winner.

Weaver led the way with his 21 kills and Bertino added 15 kills with a .469 attack percentage. Stuver handed out 43 assists, Jackson had four aces while Stuver and senior Jack Martin each finished with 13 digs.

Nazareth returns to United Volleyball Conference action Wednesday at Elmira and will play at St. John Fisher Friday in a non-conference match.
