Women’s Basketball Takes Early Lead and Doesn’t Look Back

ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Molly Benetti scored six of her team-leading 18 points in the opening minutes as the Nazareth University Women's Basketball team to an early 14-2 lead and cruised to an 82-47 win over Elmira Saturday afternoon in an Empire 8 game at Kidera Gymnasiuum.

The win for Nazareth (20-2 overall, 12-1 Empire 8) gave the team a 20-win season for the first time since the 1995-96 season when the Golden Flyers finished 23-5 and made a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Nazareth took control with the early run that saw a balanced attack with four players contributing points. Graduate student Olivia Dobrovosky started the run with two of her 12 first-half points while sophomores Kiara Anglin and Katie MacLachlan combined for six points in the run to go along with the six points from Benetti.

Nazareth led 21-10 after the first 10 minutes and held a commanding 41-25 lead at the halftime intermission.

Freshman Sarina McDowell led the team in the second half with 12 points as the Golden Flyers continued to pull away. Nazareth led 61-36 after the third quarter and scored at least 20 points in each of the four quarters.

Benetti led all scorers with 18 points while Dobrovosky finished with 16 points and McDowell and fellow freshman Madalyn Kelly each scored 12 points. Anglin and MacLachlan each scored eight points with Anglin and Benetti each grabbing a team-best nine rebounds and Benetti added five blocks.

Nazareth continues the run of home games with a matchup against Keuka Tuesday night as the Golden Flyers help eradicate the stigma surrounding mental health with the annual fundraising game in conjunction with the P.S. I Love You organization. Game time is 5:30 p.m. in Kidera Gymnasium.
