Balanced Attack Gives Men’s Volleyball a Non-Conference Win

ROCHESTER, NY – One match after opening United Volleyball Conference (UVC) play, the Nazareth University Men's Volleyball team welcomed non-conference foe Elizabethtown College to Kidera gym and came away with a 3-0 victory Friday night.

Nazareth (12-3 overall) won by set scores of 25-14, 29-27 and 25-20 in the sweep over the Blue Jays (8-5).

In the first set, sophomore AJ Burda recorded seven assists as he distributed the ball to the top three Nazareth scorers with juniors Alex Bertino, Max Stuver and Josh Weaver each recording three kills. Nazareth used a 9-2 run in the middle of the set to push ahead 18-7 and cruised to the opening set victory.

In the second set, Elizabethtown turned the momentum and rallied for a close set. There were 11 ties in the set and three lead changes but Nazareth used a Weaver kill late in the set to push ahead and take the high scoring set for a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the final set, the Golden Flyers used a late rally to take a 19-13 lead and maintained the advantage for the final points to complete the sweep.

Bertino finished with 10 kills, Stuver added eight and Weaver had seven for Nazareth. Burda finished with 31 assists while graduate student Jonathon Jackson (7) and Weaver (6) led the team in digs.

Nazareth will face Southern Virginia Thursday and return to UVC action Friday against Vassar. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. in Kidera Gymnasium.
