BEREA, OH – Senior Owen Wickens had 13 kills, sophomore AJ Burda added 24 assists and graduate student Jonathon Jackson had 12 digs but it was not enough as the #9 Nazareth University Men's Volleyball team dropped its first match of the season with a 3-0 loss to #10 North Central Friday night at the Baldwin Wallace Invitational.
North Central (7-2) won by set scores of 25-13, 25-20 and 25-19.
Nazareth (10-1) struggled on the attack with 28 kills and 24 errors in the match.
Wickens had five kills in the opening set. The Golden Flyers trailed 12-10 early but Noth Central rallied for an 11-2 run to open up a big lead at 23-12 to cruise to a first set victory.
In the second set, North Central used a 5-1 run late in the set to take a 20-15 lead as the teams traded points down the stretch.
Nazareth trailed 14-13 in the third set before North Central used a 6-0 run to open up a lead at 20-13. The Golden Flyers rallied for three of the next four points but could not close the gap.
Nazareth will face Baldwin Wallace at noon Saturday and play Messiah at 2:30 p.m. to close out the tournament matches.
