Â
Nazareth's opening weekend brings a 1-1 record as the Golden Flyers look ahead to its next tournament.
Â
Two players for Nazareth were in the double figures including
Jaylen Savage with 19 and
Luke Insley with 12. Insley also led the team in assists with five.
Â
The game was low-scoring to start, neither team breaking double-digits until midway through the first half. Leading to the second half, the game was very back-and-forth with the Golden Flyers and Engineers exchanging buckets. With two and a half minutes to go in the first,
Tyler Putney dropped in a free throw to put Nazareth up one. A three from Putney and another from Zach McFarland, as well as a good lay from RPI brought the Golden Flyers to a 26-21 lead heading into halftime.
Â
In under five minutes of second-half play, RPI was able to string together a few good runs to take the lead. The two teams then battled back and forth, taking leads from each other for the next eight-or-so minutes of play. RPI was finally able to get a two-possession advantage over Nazareth with 7:25 left to play. Though the Golden Flyers battled through the end, they were not able to recover from the deficit and dropped the game 60-54.
Â
The Golden Flyers will play again on Thursday, November 21, at 6 p.m. against RIT at the University of Rochester in the first round of Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Challenge.
