ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth men's basketball squad ran into a hot 3-point shooting University of Rochester squad on Saturday, falling 79-61 on Saturday in the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Challenge. Junior
Solomon McFarlane scored a season-high 16 points, while
Luke Insley led the Golden Flyers with 17 points.
Rochester finished the game 12-for-21 from 3-point range (57.1 percent), while Nazareth struggled from distance, going 3-for-15 (20 percent).
Nazareth falls to 2-2 overall with the loss, while Rochester moves to 5-1 on the season.
Nazareth wasn't connecting in the first half, shooting just 27.6 percent on 8-of-29 from the floor. Meanwhile, the Yellowjackets were red-hot from 3-point land, going 8-of-13 (61.5 percent).
U of R took the lead at 6-4 nearly four minutes in and never looked back.
Insley led Nazareth with seven points at the break. Rochester carried a 39-23 lead into halftime.
In the second, Nazareth cut the deficit to eight points on three separate occasions, including 56-48 with 6:16 left following a
Jaylen Savage jumper. Savage finished with 13 points. Over the next 3:30, Rochester went on a 12-6 run to open up a 68-54 advantage.
Insley was 7-for-13 from the floor and five assists. McFarlane was 5-for-10 from the floor with five rebounds and a career-high six steals.
Merritt Holly chipped in nine points.
Nazareth returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Oswego at 6 p.m.
