ROCHESTER, NY – Freshmen Tristan Henderson and Jake O'Sullivan combined for 11 kills to lead the Nazareth University Men's Volleyball team to a three-set victory over Houghton Saturday to remain undefeated on the season.
Nazareth (5-0 overall), ranked #13 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll won in straight sets by scores of 25-7, 25-18 and 25-15. The Highlanders (0-2) are in their first season of men's volleyball competition.
In the first set, senior Owen Wickens controlled the pace serving for 13 straight points early in the set including six aces as Nazareth cruised to the first-set victory. The freshman duo had three kills each in the first set.
In the second set, senior Jackson Camblin and junior Anthony Caimano recorded three kills each as the Golden Flyers broke away late with seven of the final 10 points in the set to take a 2-0 lead.
In the final set, Houghton had a lead at 5-4 early but Nazareth answered with a 7-0 run that included four aces by Camblin and a kill by Caimano as the Golden Flyers took control with an 11-5 lead. Late in the set, Wickens added three more aces in a 6-0 run to put the match away.
Wickens tied his career high with nine aces.
Nazareth finished with a .246 attack percentage, 16 aces and 19 digs. Junior Josh Weaver led the team with 14 assists and five digs.
Nazareth will play at the Elmira Invitational next Saturday with matches against Thiel and Drew.
