PITTSBURGH, PA – Junior Tessa Grover and sophomore Leah Fusilli had key kills near the end of the second set for the Nazareth University Women's Volleyball team against Mount Union but the Purple Raiders battled back and took a 29-27 decision in the set and went on to post a 3-0 win Saturday in the second of two matches on the day for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth (1-8) fell by a 3-0 score to host Carnegie Mellon early in the day before the match against Mount Union. Against Carnegie Mellon, Nazareth fell by set scores of 25-9, 25-29 and 25-9. In the Mount Union match, Nazareth fell by scores of 25-22, 29-27 and 25-16.
Nazareth held a 23-21 lead late in the second set of the Mount Union match before three straight points gave the Purple Raiders a slim 24-23 lead. Grover stopped the run with a kill. A block by Mount Union and another Grover kill made it 25-25.
An attack error gave Nazareth a lead but two consecutive kills regained the lead for Mount Union before Fusilli recorded a kill to tie the score at 27-27.
The Purple Raiders closed out the set with a kill and an attack error to take the high-scoring set.
For the match, Grover had 17 kills, 14 assists, four blocks and seven digs while Fusilli ended up with 11 kills and 15 digs. Junior Ella Kules had 20 assists and 10 digs while sophomore Jenna Mattison added 12 digs and fellow sophomore Zipporah Sparkman led the team with five blocks.
Nazareth returns home to face Buffalo State Wednesday and will play in a tri-match at Morrisville with Plattsburgh next weekend.
