Men's Vollyeball Takes Two; Beats UC Santa Cruz and St. Norbert

THOUSAND OAKS, CA – The 13th-ranked men's volleyball squad improved to 3-0 on its spring break trip on Saturday, with wins over UC Santa Barbara and St. Norbert. Nazareth took down the Banana Slugs 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19 before sweeping St. Norbert, 28-26, 25-15, 25-23. UC Santa Cruz was receiving votes in the most recent AVCA poll.
 
With the wins, Nazareth improves to 19-5 on the year. The Golden Flyers will close out their spring break trip on Monday, taking on Cal Lutheran at 5 p.m.
 
3-1 win vs UC Santa Cruz, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19
In a closely contested first set, Nazareth was able to score the last two points of the set on kills from Colin Donahue and Max Stuver for the 25-22 win. Stuver ended with 13 kills on a .500 attack percentage, while also having nine assists and seven digs.
 
After dropping the second set, Nazareth rebounded in the third for its most convincing set win at 25-18.
 
With the Golden Flyers leading 13-11 in the third, Nazareth scored four-straight points, including two service aces from Owen Wickens to seize control of the set. He led the Golden Flyers with 20 kills on a .375 attack percentage and had seven digs.
 
Nazareth saved its best hitting set for last, putting down 17 kills on 30 attempts with just three errors (.467). 
 
Trent Caviness dished out 38 assists, to go along with seven kills and 11 digs. Alex Bertino chipped in six kills and Donahue contributed four blocks.
 
3-0 win vs St. Norbert, 28-26, 25-15, 25-23
Freshman middle Nathan DeJoy had a career-high 10 kills on a .600 attack percentage in Nazareth's three set win over St. Norbert. He also had a career-high six blocks.
 
Nazareth hit over .240 in all three sets, swinging .300 in the first set, .240 in the second, and .452 in the third.
 
The Golden Flyers trailed by scores of 22-18 and 24-22 in the first set. Andrew Bodensteiner put down Nazareth's 27th point and an attack error from St. Norbert helped the Golden Flyers take set one, 28-26.
 
Nazareth had no trouble in the second and hit .452 in the final set with 18 kills on 31 attempts with just four errors. With the score at 24-23 in the third, Wickens put down his 10th and final kill to end the contest. He had five service aces, bringing his season total to 54. He also had seven digs.
 
Nate Allen had seven kills on a .222 attack percentage. Caviness had 26 assists and a team-high nine digs.
