Men’s Volleyball Rallies for Comeback Win

ELMIRA, NY – Senior Trent Caviness led the Nazareth Men's Volleyball team with 43 assists and 12 digs but it was his serving down the stretch that sealed a come-from-behind victory for the Golden Flyers in a 3-2 road win in non-conference action Wednesday night.

Elmira (7-2 overall) won the first two sets 25-20 and 29-27 but #9 Nazareth (14-2) came back with a 27-25 win in the third, a 25-23 win in the fourth and a big run at the end of a 15-10 win in the fifth set to take the match.

Nazareth trailed 10-8 in the fifth before a serving error gave service back to the Golden Flyers. Caviness went on to close out the match from the line with seven consecutive points.

A kill by junior Owen Wickens started the run and a block by Max Stuver and Colin Donahue made it a 2-0 run and tied the score at 10-10. Back-to-back kills by Wickens and Donahue gave Nazareth a 12-10 lead and Elmira used one of its time outs.

Another block for Nazareth with Wickens and Donahue combining on the stop made to 13-10 and Caviness followed with his second ace of the night to force match point.

A long attack by Elmira ended the match as Nazareth completed the comeback.

Wickens led Nazareth with 18 kills and Alex Bertino added 16 kills with a .364 average.Wickens added eight digs and four blocks while Andrew Bodensteiner and Stuver chipped in four blocks each.

Nazareth returns to United Volleyball Conference (UVC) action Saturday and Sunday at Vassar and New Paltz.
