No. 9 Men’s Volleyball Extends Undefeated Start to Season

The No. 9-ranked men's volleyball team extended its program best start to a season remaining undefeated on the season at 13-0 with its second straight five-set victory. The Golden Flyers defeated Trine University 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 24-26, and 15-12 behind a career-high 17 kills by sophomore Alex Bertino.

Nazareth totaled nine blocks while holding the Thunder to a .138 hitting percentage during the match, as three Golden Flyers contributed double digit dig totals including senior Seth Terzo (25), senior Trent Caviness (15), and junior Owen Wickens (11).

Bertino ended a five-point run by the Thunder in the first set to push Nazareth back ahead, 23-22, before a kill by sophomore Max Stuver sealed the set 25-23 in the Golden Flyers favor. Trine finished the first set with a .051 hitting percentage.

Three kills from sophomore Andrew Bodensteiner helped push Nazareth ahead 11-9 in the second set. Bertino and Wickens closed out the set with back-to-back kills after the Thunder maintained pace with Nazareth despite a large gap in the team hitting percentages, .306 to .135.

After trailing by as many as four points in the third set Nazareth pulled within a one at 24-23, but the Thunder closed the set out with a kill. The fourth set saw the Golden Flyers hold a 22-20 edge, but Trine scored six of the next eight points to send the match to a fifth set.

Wickens and Bertino contributed multiple kills apiece to spring Nazareth to an early 8-2 advantage in the fifth set before Trine scored the next six points. Wickens added two more kills and assisted on a block with freshman Nathan DeJoy to push the Golden Flyers ahead. Bodensteiner cemented the win with a solo block.

Caviness tallied 44 assists while pacing the attack that included three Golden Flyers totaling double figure kill totals: Bertino, Wickens (17) and Stuver (11). Caviness and DeJoy tied for the team-high in blocks with three each.
