Rochester, NY - Senior Trent Caviness dished out 42 assists, 13 digs, and seven kills, while Junior Owen Wickens added 19 kills, 16 digs, and two service aces as ninth-ranked Nazareth suffered its first defeat of the the season at the hands of No. 6 St. John Fisher, 25-18, 25-17, 23-25, 23-25, 5-15. Nazareth started off hot, taking the first two sets, but failed to take the third set as St. John Fisher pulled the reverse sweep and beat the Golden Flyer's 25-23, 25-23 and 15-5.
The Golden Flyers fall to 13-1 overall, while St. John Fisher moves to 13-3.
Nazareth took the first set 25-18 as multiple rallies took place in the Golden Flyers favor. Alex Bertino and Max Stuver led the way for the Golden Flyers in the first set as they took the early offensive action, totaling seven kills combined. Late in the first set, a rally at 23-17 was won by a diving dig by Caviness, assisted by Wickens. The Golden Flyers finished off the set when Bertino drilled the ball to secure the first.
In the second set, the Golden Flyers started off hot again as they put up multiple scoring runs to give themselves an early lead and take the set 25-17. Wickens and Bertino led the Flyers with eight kills a piece. Replicating the first set, Nazareth went into multiple rallies. A few of the rallies consisted of a solo stuff block and a well cut shot from Bertino. Caviness put a well-placed dump on the opposing side, followed by a huge stuff block, and Wickens buried one onto the opposing side.
In the third set, it was a close fought battle as both teams went point-for-point, ending with Fisher pulling away at the end winning 25-23.
The Golden Flyers had a slow start entering the fourth set as the Cardinals led 10-4, but managed to close the gap 24-23. An error prevented them from tying the game as Fisher took the fourth set 25-23.
In the fifth set to 15, the Golden Flyers struggled to get something going as Fisher took the early 10-2 lead. Nazareth continued to push, but it was not enough as the Cardinals walked away, winning the fifth set 15-5.
For the night, three Golden Flyers put up double-digit kills as Wickens had 19, Bertino had 14, and Stuver had 13. Seth Terzo led Nazareth with 21 digs.
Nazareth will host UVC match up against #10 NYU at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
