ROCHESTER, NY – Graduate student Olivia Dobrovosky hit a pair of free throws and sophomore Katie MacLachlan drained a 3-pointer in the final 30 seconds for the Nazareth University Women's Basketball team to close the gap to three points but the University of Rochester connected on three late free throws to escape with a 53-47 victory Thursday night in the first round of the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout tournament at Kidera Gymnasium.
After both squads shot under 27 percent in both the first and second quarters as Rochester (2-1) took ma slim 17-16 lead into the halftime break.
Each team rebounded in the third quarter for 18 points. Nazareth (1-1) shot nearly 44 percent from the field on 7-for-16, while Rochester was 50 percent at 7-for-14.
Junior Madilann Johnson had a 3-pointer in third quarter to trim the lead to a point and after a basket by freshman Sarina McDowell, Dobrovosky made a pair of free throws to give the Golden Flyers a lead at 34-33.
A late basket by the Yellowjackets secured a 35-34 lead after three periods.
Following a McDowell layup to pull Nazareth within 40-39 with just under seven minutes remaining, Rochester used full-court pressure to build a lead to six points at 45-39.
Trailing 50-44, MacLachlan hit her second 3-pointer of the game with :26 seconds left on the clock to make it 50-47. Nazareth was unable to come any closer.
Dobrovosky and MacLachlan led Nazareth with 12 points each and McDowell added 10 points off the bench. McDowell and Dobrovosky had eight rebounds each to lead the Golden Flyers. Anglin handed out six assists and had a team-leading four blocked shots.
Nazareth will be back in action Saturday for the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout, hosting RIT at 8 p.m. RIT lost to Fisher in the first game 83-60. Rochester will play St. John Fisher at 6 p.m. Saturday.
