VICTOR, NY – Graduate student Emily Weaver ran her best race of the season and broke the Nazareth University school record as she led the Golden Flyers to their first-ever Women's Cross Country Empire 8 Championship Saturday afternoon at the Parkview Fairways Golf Course.
Weaver was second overall and posted a new school-record time for the 6K distance with a blazing 21:47.2 to eclipse the record by more than 30 seconds. The old record was set by Gabrielle LeBihan (22:17.9) in 2014.
Weaver was not the only top-10 finisher for Nazareth as the Golden Flyers won the team title with three additional runners among the top-10.
Sophomore Ella Impaglia (21:58.8) was fourth overall and senior Lilianna Hanning (22:06.8) was on her heels with a fifth-place finish. Freshman Megan Moyer (22:28.8) placed 10th overall and senior Paige Ackley (23:02.0) rounded out the scoring for Nazareth.
The Golden Flyers finished with 34 points to win the championship as they outdistanced St. John Fisher (42). Houghton (82 points) was third followed by Utica (127), Sage (149), Alfred (157), Hartwick (178) and Keuka (209).
With the finish among the top seven runners, Weaver, Impaglia and Hanning earned First Team All-Empire 8 honors. Moyer and Ackley were Second Team All-Conference winners while a trio of freshmen – Morgan Pospiech (17th), Ava Baker (20th) and Bailey Visingard (tied for 21st) earned Third Team All-Empire 8 honors.
