Late Rallies Give Rochester a Women’s Volleyball Win

ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Leah Fusilli had 13 kills and fellow sophomore Jenna Mattison had 17 digs for the Nazareth University Women's Volleyball team but a pair of late rallies gave the University of Rochester the edge in a 3-1 win Wednesday at the Palestra.

The Golden Flyers (6-12 overall) had the late rally in the first set but an early lead and mid-set run for Rochester (13-6) was too much to overcome and Nazareth dropped a 25-16 decision in the first set.

Nazareth used an early run and scored late to even the match with a 27-25 win in the second set. The Golden Flyers recorded 17 kills in the set and had a .282 attack percentage with three aces to pull even.

In the third set, Nazareth jumped out to an early lead, but Rochester came back and put together a late rally to regain the lead with a 25-16 win in the set and a 2-1 edge in the match.

In the final set, the teams battled back and forth for most of the set and the score was tied at 18-18 before the Yellowjackets scored the final seven points of the set to clinch the match with a 25-18 win.

Fusilli led the offense with 13 kills while sophomore Rylie Loomis added 11 kills and junior Tessa Grover finished with 10 kills and 13 assists. Junior Ella Kules led the team with 16 assists and chipped in 10 digs while Mattison was the top defender with 17 digs.

Nazareth returns to Empire 8 action this weekend at Hartwick (Friday) and at Russell Sage (Saturday). The Golden Flyers are currently tied for third in the Empire 8 standings with Hartwick second and Sage in seventh.
