Conference Win Streak Snapped with Overtime Loss

RYE, NY – A third-period power play goal by Manhattanville forced an overtime period and the Valiants scored with 1:37 left in the extra period to pull out a 2-1 victory over the Nazareth Women's Hockey team Friday night at the Playland Ice Casino.

Nazareth (13-5-0 overall, 12-1-0 UCHC), ranked #12 in the latest USCHO.com poll, lost for the first time in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play in nearly three yeas with the last loss coming at the start of the 2020-21 Covid-shortened season at Elmira February 20, 2021. The win streak for Nazareth was stopped at 36 consecutive games.

Nazareth opened the scoring very late in the first period as senior Makenna Wiljanen deflected a shot from the point by sophomore Ivey Lyden. Junior Junia Holmes also earned an assist on the play.

The Golden Flyers nearly took a 2-0 lead with a goal by senior Ally Watrous but the goal was disallowed due to a hand pass call.

The score remained 1-0 until midway through the third period when Manhattanville (10-8-1, 10-4-1 UCHC) knocked in a loose puck after a scramble in front of the goal as junior McKinley Hoff made the original stop.

The same two teams will complete the weekend series with a 2 p.m. game Saturday in Rye.
