ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth Women's Volleyball team wrapped up play at the RIT Invitational Saturday with a thrilling five-set win over Lasell but dropped a 3-0 decision to Penn State Behrend in the final match.
Nazareth (3-7) downed Lasell in five sets after falling behind with a 25-23 loss in the opening set. The Golden Flyers rebounded to win 25-14 in the second before falling behind again after a 25-22 loss in the third set. Nazareth rallied to win a 25-20 decision in the fourth and then jumped out to an early lead and won a 15-10 set in the tiebreaker.
Against Penn State Behrend, Nazareth fell in straight sets 25-23, 25-13, 25-16.
In the second set against Lasell, Nazareth used seven aces and a pair of blocks to control the set. In the fourth set, freshman Rylie Loomis had 13 kills including two in the final three points of the set to lift the Golden Flyers and force the tie breaker set.
Loomis started the fifth set with three kills while, sophomores Ruth Jackson and Tessa Grover each added one and senior Kaylee Kelly also had a pair of kills as Nazareth jumped out to a 9-3 lead.
Another Loomis kill later made it a 13-7 lead but Lasell battled back with three straight points to narrow the gap. Freshman Jenna Mattison recorded a kill to stop the rally at 14-10 and Jackson finished the match with her fourth kill of the match.
Kelly finished with 16 kills, 12 digs and five aces while Grover missed a triple-double by one dig with 14 kills, 22 assists and nine digs. She also added four blocks.
Loomis added eight digs to her 13 kills and sophomore Ella Kules added 20 assists, eight digs and three aces. Jackson finished with four kills and six blocks.
In the loss to Penn State Behrend, Grover had nine kills, seven assists, seven digs and a .471 attack percentage. Kules added 13 assists and Kelly had six kills.
Nazareth will play Wednesday night at William Smith and then play its first home match Friday night against Keuka in an Empire 8 match in Kidera Gym.
