Fisher rallies past Nazareth to take E8 title, 12-7

Golden Flyers finish 2022 season at 8-10 overall

PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Top-seeded St. John Fisher used a 10-3 second-half scoring spree to rally past second-seeded Nazareth Sunday to win the Empire 8 Conference championship in women's lacrosse by defeating the Golden Flyers 12-7 at Growney Stadium.

With the victory, Fisher improved to 10-8 overall and captured its 10th straight E8 title. Nazareth, which led 4-2 at halftime, had its season end with a record of 8-10. The Carddinals also gained the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Emma Robinson scored two goals for Nazareth and Emma States added one goal and one assist.

Fisher had an 18-5 edge in draw controls, including an 11-4 differential in the second half to control the pace of play. The Cardinals scored in the opening minute of the third quarter and outscored the Golden Flyers 6-1 over that decisive 15-minute stretch to bring an 8-5 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Fisher also tallied the first goal of the fourth quarter, but Nazareth got goals from Eleanor Matz and Robinson to close within 9-7 with more than eight minutes remaining. Fisher, however, won all four ensuing draw controls and capitalized by scoring the game's final three goals for the win. With limited possession time, Nazareth managed just one shot thereafter -- a free-position bid by Robinson with 2:02 left -- but Fisher goalie Lilly Goodsell made the save.

Nazareth got off to a good start as Reva Mussi, States and Robinson each converted free-position attempts for a 3-0 lead. Fisher scored the next two goals, but Nazareth got a goal from Maggie Vay off an assist from Matz for a 4-2 lead at the break.

Nazareth went scoreless for more than 15 minutes of game time over the second and third quarters before Hannah Kirisits scored Nazareth's alone third-quarter goal.

Katie Lawrence played in goal for the Golden Flyers and finished with four saves. Fisher outshot Nazareth 21-14 overall.
