Nazareth splits non-conference twinbill with Elmira

Golden Flyers (17-17 overall) will compete in Empire 8 Tournament Thursday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Marissa Berghorn doubled home the winning runs in the first game Sunday as Nazareeth won the opener of a non-conference doubleheader with Elmira, 6-5. The Soaring Eagles came back to win the second game 6-0.

In a tune-up for this week's Empire 8 Conference Tournament, Nazareth evened its overall record at 17-17, while Elmira wrapped up its regular-season schedule with a 14-15 record.

In the first game, Nazareth took a seemingly safe 4-1 lead into the seventh inning only to see Elmira rally for three runs to force the game to extra innings. Elmira scratched out a run in the top of the ninth, but Nazareth came back in the bottom half. Justine Brooks started the inning on second base and advanced to third on an infield grounder. Sarah Simmons walked and both runners scored after Berghorn ripped a double to left field for the win.

Nazareth scored four runs in the third inning following inning-opening singles by Emily Daciw and Jessica Keller. The runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Katie Schmidt and both scored on a double by Cassidy Hoffmier. Simmons followed with a single to center field and was on the front end of a double steal with Hoffmier scoring on the back end. Simmons later scored on a single by Berghorn.

Daciw improved to 9-7 on the pitcher's mound as she scattered six hits over nine innings and struck out 15 to run her season total to 147. Simmons finished with three hits and Keller went 2-for-4 in her first start behind the plate.

Elmira evened things up in the second game as Nazareth managed just three hits against three Soaring Eagles pitchers. Daciw had a single in the second inning, Brooks doubled in the third and Schmidt dropped in a single in the fifth.

Maddie Funk pitched all seven innings for Nazareth and yielded eight hits, three earned runs with two strikeouts.

Nazareth competes next in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament, scheduled for May 5-7 at Alfred. Matchups and times will be determined Monday.
